Automated Parking in the ‘Europacity Berlin’ to increase the quality of life

Even a lively and dynamic city such as Berlin has to reinvent itself and must continue to develop. This is the objective of the new future location ‘Europacity Berlin’.  In this connection, an area in the vicinity of the main railway station comes into focus, where political and cultural institutions have already settled down. The plan is to create 3000 new flats, offices in an open-space concept, which may be very attractive especially for start-up companies, promenades with arcades, restaurants and green open spaces, with the intention to provide the citizens with a fresh new feeling towards the city. This ambience will emphasise and demonstrate that Berlin is an attractive, creative and innovative city, and will also put life back into a space that has lain dormant for many years. This sounds really good - but what has this got to do with the traffic?

Together with the Frauenhofer Fokus, the Berlin ‘Agentur für Elektromobilität (eMO)  [Agency for Electro-Mobility] has developed a concept of an innovative mobility hub, that will look into exploiting this new inner city quarter. If one imagines an area of 61 hectare - the equivalent of about 83 football grounds - where 3000 flats are to be constructed as well as further buildings and where about 16,500 people will be working in offices, it is quite obvious that the amount of traffic around the Euopacity will increase dramatically. An efficient and intelligent traffic network would increase the quality of life immensely and relieve the stress on the roads around the new future location.  

Automated Parking to relieve the City Traffic

One of the most important issues of such a new traffic arrangement would be parking spaces, which facilitate car drivers to find a suitable parking space quickly. This may be a challenge not easily managed within a city, involving more driving time, extra petrol resp. energy and thus leading to further pollute the environment. So-called mobility hubs, also referred to as ‘Multi-storey car parks of the future’ could remove the stress at this point.    

Monitoring the car parking area in order to point out free spaces to the drivers, or the parking guidance systems will soon be part of a digitalised traffic reality. The intelligent and automated multi-storey car park will go even further:  

  • Reserving parking spaces
  • Automated parking  (from driving into and leaving the multi-storey car park)
  • Developing a mobility hub for car-, scooter-, or bicycle sharing
  • Charging stations for e-cars
  • Service for car drivers  
  • possibly even car maintenance

E-cars are particularly practical for city traffic because they reduce noise and pollutants. .With this option, hubs at central places become more attractive, create parking spaces and increase life quality in the relevant parts of the city in an innovative, efficient, and comfortable manner.
